What is RSS? |

Leadership development can build the capacities of individuals, groups, and organizations to resolve community issues. Volunteer development can enhance the potential for community service. The two disciplines share a common focus: human capacity-building for public well-being. CSREES promotes leadership and volunteer development through its participation in interagency federal government teams related to volunteer programs; funding support for volunteer leader forums, national conferences, and community training opportunities; and research focusing on building volunteer competencies.

• CSREES sponsors National Extension Conference on Volunteerism to provide professional development experience for professionals working with volunteers.
• Nearly three-quarters of a million volunteers participate in 4-H annually.

Partnerships

• CSREES partners with eight other federal agencies on the Federal Interagency Team on Volunteerism.

Selected Results and Impacts

• Washington State University 4-H established the Volunteer Development Action Team to enhance volunteers' skills to meet the needs of challenged youth audiences
• CSREES' Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program trains volunteers to educate low-income families on nutrition, food safety, and healthy lifestyles.
