Strong, healthy families are the foundation of American communities, and family well-being is a shared priority for all Americans. CSREES' Family Science program strengthens families through effective and widespread collaborations among federal, state, and local agencies throughout the nation. Advancing CSREES' goal to improve quality of life in rural areas, the Family Science program increases the understanding of family systems, family performance, and the overall well-being of families in society.

Partnerships

• CSREES partners wiith the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and others to highlight family caregiving under the President's New Freedom Initiative.
• The Brookdale Foundation Group Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) announces funding for the 2009 Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP).
• The Coalition of Organizations on Disaster Education recently launched online the updated guide, "Talking about Disasters: Guide for Standard Messages."

Selected Results and Impacts

• CSREES and multistate extension teams use presentations and other tools to educate Medicare beneficiaries about the new Medicare Prescription Drug Card Program.
• CSREES and a multistate team developed the Age Paced Parenting Newsletters, showing parents how to improve their parenting skills.
• CSREES partners with a multistate team to study impacts of changing economic conditions and welfare reform on the well-being and functioning of rural families.
